It’s hard to believe, but 2019 is past its half-way mark. The School of Making and The Factory Café is keeping busy with workshops scheduled from August through late Fall. Our workshops are open to makers and cooks, amateurs and skilled alike. We invite you to join us:
On August 10th the team will be traveling to Hillfolk in Bentonville, Arkansas for a T-Shirt Workshop. Working with blank t-shirts, each maker will learn the physics of hand-sewing, appliqué, and other School of Making techniques.
On August 16th, the team returns to The Factory for the popular Intro to Hand-Sewing Workshop. Like the workshop at Hillfolk, instruction will include the physics of sewing, appliqué, and other sewing techniques. For this workshop, each maker creates a custom DIY Kit chosen from a curated selection of kits.
Our next Canning Workshop in The Factory Café is on September 10th. Prepare to learn to “put-up” summer tomatoes for cooking year-round.
On October the 8th, join us at The Factory Café for our first Challah Bread Workshop, where participants will learn to make this traditional bread along with seasonal compound butter.
Join us for our popular One-Day Embroidery Workshop on October 11th. During this class makers learn embroidery stitches, various sewing techniques, and receive an overview of garment construction. Pair this workshop with our Friends of The Café Dinner featuring a surprise chef on October 10th. Enjoy local and regional vegetables, meats, and ingredients during this all-inclusive evening with guest speakers, cocktails, appetizers, four courses, and wine pairings.
Join our Homemade Holiday Appetizers Workshop on the 24th of October and the following week, our Hand Pie Workshop on the 29th—getting us all ready for holiday festivities.
For an in-depth experience, The School Making is hosting the Three-Day Workshop at The Factory from November 7th through 9th. During this workshop makers immerse themselves in The School of Making with instruction on sewing and embroidery, and access our DIY pattern and stencil libraries. Optional tours of the Shoals area are also available.
The Factory Café finishes the year on a delicious note with a new Dim Sum Cooking Workshop on November 7th —pair this with our Three-Day sewing workshop.
The School of Making will finish out the year with a One-Day Workshop at Craft South in Nashville. Natalie and the team will provide instruction on the physics of hand-sewing, as well as an overview of appliqué and other sewing techniques. Coffee and refreshments will be provided by the Craft South studio as makers work on their custom DIY Kits.
We are ending our 2019 Workshop programming on a sweet note with our Holiday Cookie Workshop at The Factory Café. Join us and learn how to create various cookies just in time to spread joy and sweet treats for the holiday season.

To create a more immersive experience, advance registration is required for all of our workshops. All our events are appropriate for all skill levels. If you have questions please give our Workshops Coordinator, Bonnie, a call at 256-760-1090 x113, or email workshops@alabamachanin.com.
