One of The Shoals most famous residents was Helen Keller. Blind and deaf, the Tuscumbia native devoted her life to education and improving the lives of the deaf and blind. She authored numerous books throughout her life and on September 14, 1964 (55 years ago this month) she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Johnson. In honor of this anniversary this week we take a deeper look at the life and works of Helen Keller.
