At Alabama Chanin, we have long been inspired by the work that Patagonia does to manufacture responsibly and create the smallest possible footprint when producing their garments. In 2014, we began a collaboration with them that allows us to put into practice what is called circular design. With circular design, each garment ideally remains sustainable from its creation, throughout its life, until the end of its use. Those items that have reached the end of their original usefulness are responsibly disposed of or repurposed for other projects.
Patagonia offers customers ways to get the maximum use from each product through care and repair instructions and encourages them to return or ship damaged items back to their production facility to be repaired. Garments that are truly at the end of their lives can be returned to Patagonia for credit to be used on future purchases.
We are proud to say that we have once again partnered with Patagonia, allowing us to be part of their Worn Wear program – creating new items (in this case, scarves) from those that would normally be discarded. Our Reclaimed Down Wrap Scarves, Long Scarves, and Short Scarves are made by our Bldg. 14 team from upcycled down jackets. In addition, a limited quantity of artisan-made, hand sewn Long Scarves are available.
