Founded in 2015 by Shoals resident, Melissa Bain, The 610 Project is a community-driven partnership program and non-profit that is focused on empowering the people of Haiti. In addition to being one of our wine reps over the years, Melissa previously worked with a non-profit, Soles4Souls, and made her first trip to Haiti in 2010, where her love for service grew. She was inspired to create her own non-profit that engages our tight-knit community here in the Shoals to help the people of Haiti.
610’s current efforts include a bike share program sponsored by The Spinning Spoke of Downtown Florence; From the Attic to the Island Music Program; and a Muscle Shoals City School-wide backpack drive, with the ultimate goal to assist in building a primary school in the coastal city of Les Cayes, Haiti.
Our community has come together in many ways to contribute to fundraising efforts, and this month six local chefs—including our very own, Zachariah Chanin—volunteer their time and prepare a special six-course meal. The event, called Tables of 10, takes place on Friday, March 18 at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center. The cost is $150 per ticket.
All proceeds will go toward the Education and Outreach Center in Les Cayes, Haiti. The center will serve as a school for children, a center for vocational training for adults, and the home base for future microenterprises and entrepreneurs.
