For the sixth year in a row, Alabama Chanin has partnered with the Southern Foodways Alliance for the Friends of the Café Dinner Series. Truly a unique experience, these dinners bring the easy comfort of friends gathered around a dinner table but with a cuisine that has been elevated by best chefs across the country.
As we debut the dinners for March and April, keep any eye out for more dinners that will be scheduled for later in the year.
March brings Peter Cho of Portland’s Han Oak. Formerly the executive chef for the Michelin-starred Breslin in New York City, Peter, along with his wife, and young son, relocated to Portland, Oregon to relish in the change of pace a baby brings and to be closer to Peter’s parents.
Described as a “non-traditional Korean-American family restaurant,” Han Oak was named after the traditional Korean home, the hanok. Among its many accolades, Han Oak was named Oregonian’s Restaurant of the Year 2017, Esquire’s #8 Best New Restaurant, 2017, and one of GQ’s Best New Restaurants in America. Food & Wine also named Peter as a Best New Chef 2017.
Happening at The Factory on March 26th, the Friends of the Café Dinner with Peter Cho begins at 6:30pm with a cocktail hour and live music from Duquette Johnson, followed by dinner at 7:30pm.
In April, chef Whitney Otawka joins us. Formally a Sous Chef under Hugh Acheson at his restaurant 5&10 and later Executive Chef at the esteemed Greyfield Inn in Cumberland Island, Georgia, Whitey is currently the Executive Chef of Farm 255 in Athens, Georgia. In October of 2019 Whitney debuted her first cookbook: The Saltwater Table, Recipes from the Tropical South.
Named one of Atlanta’s Rising Stars in 2012 and a former judge on Bravo’s Top Chef, her cuisine is influenced “by the old world, traditional country dishes of France, Italy, Spain, and the American South.” For a feast for the eyes, we recommend you visit Whitney’s gorgeously curated website which takes you on a visual journey of food, travel, cooking.
Also happening at The Factory, the Friends of the Café Dinner with Whitney Otawka is April 16th, with a cocktail hour that begins at 6:30pm, followed by dinner at 7:30pm.
