Community has always been an integral part of Alabama Chanin. Nearly two decades ago Natalie moved back to the familiar community of her hometown to begin what has grown into Alabama Chanin’s Family of Businesses. Sewers from the local community handcraft each Collection garment using stitching skills passed down through generations of their families. The team of Alabama Chanin is a community of friends and coworkers, all working towards a common goal. Throughout the years Alabama Chanin has hosted the community (both local and from afar) for workshops, dinners, and art installations.
It is in this spirit of fellowship that Alabama Chanin announces The Gathering 2020 on October 1st – 3rd . Now in its third official year (Natalie has been hosting a community gathering of some sorts for nearly two decades), The Gathering celebrates sustainability, community, good food, and making.
Muscle Shoals native and chef Adam Evans of Automatic Seafood and Oysters kicks off the event with his Friends of the Café Dinner at The Factory on October 1st. Benefiting the Southern Foodways Alliance, the dinner features appetizers, four courses with wine pairings, and guest speakers throughout the evening.
Also this year is the exhibit: A Deeper South: Photography + Short Film + Narrative by Pete Candler and John Hayes. “A Deeper South is a twenty-year photographic quest along the backroads of southern and personal history in search of the stories that shape us more than we thought. The vision of A Deeper South is rooted in the idea that the spiritual, political, and cultural health of a nation, region, city, town, or person depends upon an honest and unflinching memory; that the gravest danger to our cities and ourselves is a willful amnesia; that hope is to be found through the work of active remembrance, putting back together the fragments of personhood scattered by a culture of selective memory,” says the writer, photographer, and filmmaker Pete Candler.
