“Creativity is nothing but a mind set free.” ― Torrie T. Asai
The School of Making is a community of makers. In a time of crisis, as the entire world is currently under during the COVID-19 outbreak, it is the communities that rally together to offer comfort and support to all. We, like so many in our community, know that the simple act of making is cathartic, joyful, and can bring solace to a worried mind.
It is with this sense of fellowship and respite that we share a few of our favorite DIY projects from the Journal—all utilizing supplies you already have in your fabric stack, closet, or craft room.
P.S.: Natalie wrote a post on Friday titled ‘Man and Woman as Maker’, where she shares sources of inspiration for this moment. If you missed, we encourage you to go back and give it a read.
First and foremost, if you have a machine or hand sewing needles and time on your hands, start sewing face masks. There is a pattern we’ve tried here and good information on materials here.

Our new Collection was updated a few weeks ago draws inspiration from our archives and the 20 years that Natalie has been designing and working in our community.
We’ve reintroduced our Air Love Tee to support work for our local artisans. The German saying “Mann kann von luft und liebe leben” was a phrase Natalie learned during her time as a stylist living abroad in the 1990s. It roughly translates to “one can live from air and love alone” or “nothing else in life is necessary but air and love”.
On Friday, we began manufacturing facemasks and other medical supplies for healthcare providers during this crisis. We’re following all guidelines to keep our team safe right now.
