Inspiration comes from everywhere, it’s how you process it that’s important.” – Rob Ryan

The development of our patterned fabrics has taken years, as we’ve carefully curated fabric color, ink color, and stencil design to create an inspiring combination for use in making. Our patterned fabrics utilize 100% Organic Medium-weight Cotton Jersey and are printed by Spoonflower with eco-friendly, water-based inks and dyes. Since 2016, we’ve shared a selection of our stencil designs this way and as an alternative to stenciling your own fabric yardage.

Inspired by the Year of Color and the arrival of our latest patterned fabricAbstract Peacock, we’ve created two projects for making: the T-Shirt Top Bundle and are reintroducing the Swing Skirt Bundle in new color options.

The bundles feature color combinations paired with the garment pattern of your choice. All of our printed fabrics are limited-edition and available while supplies last.

The Swing Skirt debuted on page 149 of Alabama Stitch Book in 2010 and has been a best-selling style ever since. The fit is comfortable, flattering, and versatile. It was featured in Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns and became our first stand-alone pattern. The pattern is offered with six length variations and four pocket variations.

The T-Shirt Top has a slightly fitted waist and a longer length than a standard t-shirt. Over the years, we’ve offered this top with various sleeve styles, three of which are provided with the pattern: long fluted, short, and cap. It is featured on page 31 of Alabama Studio Sewing + Design and 44 of Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns.

Each bundle includes the paper pattern of your choice and enough fabric and Button Craft thread to create a double-layer garment with a printed top layer and basic backing layer. The Swing Skirt Bundle includes matching Fold-over Elastic Ribbon. Pair the bundles with Alabama Stitch BookAlabama Studio Sewing + Design, or Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns for more project inspiration and sewing instruction.

Create your own adventure and choose from a variety of techniques like Reverse Appliqué or Negative Reverse Appliqué.

And use the fabrics as a roadmap for your work and share your projects with us on Instagram by using the hashtags #theschoolofmaking and #TSOM20in20 for a chance to be featured.

P.S.: As we explore patterns in design, Rob Ryan, whose quote about inspiration led this post, is no stranger to the concept or to our studio. The papercut artist and screenprinter’s work is based on different shapes and graphic identities, much in the same way we create and understand our stencils.
