“I love the rebelliousness of snail mail, and I love anything that can arrive with a postage stamp. There’s something about that person’s breath and hands on the letter.” ― Diane Lane
As we have all spent the better part of 2020 socially distanced, the idea of a letter, a postcard, or a greeting card—a tangible human connection, far removed from the impersonality of an email or text—is exciting as well as comforting. For us here in the US, the United States Postal Service makes the delivery of these precious communications possible. This week we take a deeper look into the USPS, postage stamps (including a few of our new favorites), and invite you to reach out to friends and loved ones with this old-fashioned, but newly important, personal connection.

In Alabama: Alabama Statehood Stamp

@Alabama Chanin
We’ve partnered with Birmingham-based shop, basic.—who, like Alabama Chanin, is committed to slow fashion and social responsibility—to create a limited-edition t-shirt inspired by the activism of Rosa Parks. 100% of the profits from this piece will be donated to the Equal Justice Initiative to support their work of challenging prevailing narratives about race in America through extensive research, documentation, and educational efforts. Read more about Rosa Parks here and find the tee here.
@The School of Making
Inspired by the Year of Color and the arrival of our latest patterned fabric, Abstract Peacock, we’ve created two projects for making: the T-Shirt Top Bundle and are reintroducing the Swing Skirt Bundle in new color options. Create your own adventure and choose from a variety of techniques like Reverse Appliqué or Negative Reverse Appliqué.
And use the fabrics as a roadmap for your work and share your projects with us on Instagram by using the hashtags #theschoolofmaking and #TSOM20in20 for a chance to be featured.
