“A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.” – Diana Vreeland

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, or the CFDA, was founded in 1962 by Eleanor Lambert, who had a prolific career and impact on American fashion that spanned over 75 years. A celebration of American designers and fashion, the CFDA (a not-for-profit trade association) leads several philanthropic initiatives and honors American designers in their yearly CFDA Awards with a mission to strengthen the impact of American fashion in the global economy. In 2003, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund was created in response to 9/11 and how the crisis impacted emerging talent. At the onset of COVID-19 earlier this year, they repurposed the fund into “A Common Thread, a fundraiser to aid fashion businesses most impacted by the pandemic.

In 2009, Natalie was a semi-finalist for their prestigious Fashion Fund Award, and in 2013 she won their Eco-Fashion Challenge that identifies and celebrates American designers working in the realm of sustainable fashion. She has been a longtime member of the CFDA.

This week, in anticipation of the launch of their new digital platform, RUNWAY360, we share a bit of background on the CFDA and take a look into the archives of Natalie’s involvement with the organization. Look for Alabama Chanin on RUNWAY360 tomorrow.
