The fundamental right of voting has not always been freely available to all citizens of our country. While the United States Constitution was written in 1787, women could not vote until 1920, with the passage of the 19th Amendment. It was not until 1957 that Native Americans in all 50 states could vote. The Voting Rights Act, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting, was not passed until 1965.
Voting gives a voice to every citizen. With National Voter Registration Day last Tuesday and the US presidential election coming up in November, we encourage everyone to exercise their hard-fought-for right to vote. Every voice is needed for meaningful change to happen.
