“Voting is the expression of our commitment to ourselves, one another, this country, and this world.” ― Sharon Salzberg
The fundamental right of voting has not always been freely available to all citizens of our country. While the United States Constitution was written in 1787, women could not vote until 1920, with the passage of the 19th Amendment. It was not until 1957 that Native Americans in all 50 states could vote. The Voting Rights Act, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting, was not passed until 1965.
Voting gives a voice to every citizen. With National Voter Registration Day last Tuesday and the US presidential election coming up in November, we encourage everyone to exercise their hard-fought-for right to vote. Every voice is needed for meaningful change to happen. This week we share links to images and art that reflect on the history and future of voting, along with and resources to help you cast your vote.

In Remembrance
“I am one of countless people she directly encouraged and deeply inspired to use reason and argument in service of justice and humanity. Justice Ginsburg also showed that it is possible to build deep and meaningful friendships with people despite severe disagreements. At this time of deep social and political divisions, there is much to learn from her life and her commitments. Above all, she changed the lives of millions as a lawyer and as a jurist by dismantling barriers to employment, education, and roles in families and society based solely on gender — and showed how law can, with persistence and vision, be a tool to bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.” ― Martha Minow, Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor and Member of the Faculty of Education
We encourage you to vote in Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s honor and do your part, as all of us at Alabama Chanin will, to “bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.”
