The holiday season inspires ways that we can show generosity, express gratitude, give back, and support others— oftentimes through charitable giving. Today, on Giving Tuesday, we highlight an organization whose work, like Alabama Chanin, is rooted in textiles: Project Threadways.
Project Threadways is a nonprofit that records, studies, and explores the history of textiles. Through their work, they seek to understand and document the impact that textiles and their creation had on our local community, the region of the American south, the nation, and finally at the global level—connecting the people, places, and materials throughout the process.
Founded in 2019 as a 501(c)(3), Project Threadways utilizes the experience of our company and Natalie’s vision through academic partnerships and programing with the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture. Whether academic, financial, or creative, Threadways seeks partners to help them further the collection of stories and scholarship to help preserve the past while creating a common future across our region and nation. Donations fund all work of Project Threadways including operating costs, academic scholarship projects, and public education initiatives. Find out to support their work here.
Through our Shop to Support initiative this year, and because of your purchases, we were able to contribute to Project Threadways, Every Mother Counts, the Equal Justice Initiative, Equality Shoals, Project Say Something, and Tennesee Riverkeeper. These organizations have a range of missions and are located in our community and beyond. We encourage you to learn more about each of them through the links above or find similar organizations in your area.
The challenges of 2020 have amplified the need for many, and we seek to help others whenever we can. We challenge ourselves to use our voices, gifts, donations, and hearts to encourage year-round giving and gratitude.
Give: time, voice, dollars, goods, kindness, talent, and give together this year for #GivingTuesday. Seek out what inspires you and give a little when opportunities arise. Reach out to your local organizations to find out how you can get involved or make online donations to charities that mean the most to you. Showing compassion enriches your life and makes our communities healthier.
P.S.: Project Threadways had planned to host their annual symposium at The Factory in April 2020, but chose to postpone it to 2021. The team is planning a virtual experience on Saturday, April 17, 2021. Save the date and look to projectthreadways.org for future announcements and registration opportunities coming soon…
