Swatch of the Month Inspiration featuring Journeys in Natural Dyeing: Techniques for Creating Color at Home; Kristine Vejar: Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns from the Alabama Chanin Journal Archives; June Swatch of the Month Exclusive: Naturally Dyed Embroidery Floss; “Shearing day at Sally Fox’s farm from A Verb for Keeping Warm Blog; The Slim Scarf Kit; “Mama’s Little Teacup Onesie project dyeing directions” from The Modern Natural Dyer: A Comprehensive Guide to Dyeing Silk, Wool, Linen, and Cotton at Home by Kristine Vejar (pages 76–77).
For over a decade, we’ve known and loved Kristine Vejar and her textile work through A Verb for Keeping Warm, along with her wife and Verb co-founder Adrienne Rodriguez. Since that time, Kristine and Adrienne have become friends, inspiration, supporters, and teachers of The School of Making method of sewing. They have hosted us for stitch-ins at Verb, helped us with workshops in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland, and answered many questions about natural dyeing when we kept our own indigo vats in the studio. In her first book, The Modern Natural Dyer, Kristine made the Iron Age Tank and Gilded Cardigan projects with pieces from Alabama Chanin’s inaugural machine-sewn collection.
Kristine is passionate about her work with textiles. Through our collaborations with her over the years, we’ve felt her deep passion for craft. She and Adrienne celebrate the beauty and wonder that come from the act of making. Their wardrobes, garden, dye studio, and books (The Modern Natural Dyer and Journeys in Natural Dyeing) inspire.
