Today on the Journal, Rinne shares the history of and process of our collaboration that has created hand-painted designs in the Permission to Wander capsule collection.

From Rinne:

This little collection of garments and treasures is inspired by the idea ‘permission to wander’….many years ago my friend Hope Hilton used this term in relation to a body of her work and it stuck with me….

Five years ago, Natalie and I were doing an artist’s residency in Marfa, Texas, and I based my workshop around this idea of Hope’s. It has morphed into my own body of work that has grown over the last few years.

Natalie and I have collaborated many, many times in different ways; years ago we made this stencil from one of my light drawings…

Earlier this summer, I went to Alabama Chanin’s Factory in Florence, Alabama, and we played around with hand painting the stencil in different shades inspired by the forest. Here, Iona handprints the prototype for one of the tops, based on a t-shirt I have worn for 25 years…

…inspiration from a light drawing…

…a bandana for forest finds…

I love the way the paint bleeds together like my light drawings…

The simple, easygoing tee, is based on an old, well-worn t-shirt of mine.

Get lost in some way or another… you will be glad you did
