Tomorrow, the 21 Year Celebration continues to unfold with new entries from our archives, published articles, interviews, and essays. This week, we look at 2003—a year ripe with collaborations and hear from more friends and colleagues of Natalie and Alabama Chanin.
This celebration marks Natalie’s legacy in sustainable design and honors our collaborators, team, friends, community, artisans, and those that have inspired all of us at Alabama Chanin through their work and partnerships over the decades.
Explore the 21 Year Celebration here and find designs symbolic of our journey here in the 21 Year Collection.

@ Alabama Chanin
In addition to the 21 Year Collection, we’ve released a One-of-a-Kind Collection made from zero waste designs. Crafted from organic fabric scraps from our cutting department, each garment is stitched together with unique variations that cannot be recreated. The Core Essentials collection has also received an update to the wardrobe building blocks and basic styles.
@ The School of Making
New to The School of Making are September’s Swatch of the Month, which features Backstitch Reverse Appliqué using Variegated Embroidery Floss, new kits and colorways, and Studio Bundle #3. This month’s Swatch of the Month design reflects on the creative process and journey in each of us. Using the New Leaves design, natural elements come into play and call back Natalie’s month long residency program at the Hambidge Center in the north Georgia mountains during the summer of 2018. Studio Bundle #3 finds color inspiration from Natalie’s time at Hambidge and the work of Mary Hambidge.
