On September 21, 2000, Natalie “Alabama” Chanin showed her first collection, a “project” that would become Alabama Chanin.
Tomorrow—21 years to the day—begins a celebration of 21 years through shared pieces from our archives, published articles, interviews, and essays from friends and colleagues. This celebration honors our collaborators, team, friends, community, artisans, and those that have inspired Natalie and Alabama Chanin through their work and partnerships over the decades. Find the celebration here and look for essay highlights shared on the Journal over the coming months, as entries unfold.

In addition to our 21 year celebration, look for a new collection arriving tomorrow that furthers our zero-waste initiatives.
@ The School of Making
New to The School of Making are September’s Swatch of the Month, which features Backstitch Reverse Appliqué using Variegated Embroidery Floss, new kits and colorways, and Studio Bundle #3. This month’s Swatch of the Month design reflects on the creative process and journey in each of us. Using the New Leaves design, natural elements come into play and call back Natalie’s month long residency program at the Hambidge Center in the north Georgia mountains during the summer of 2018.
Studio Bundle #3 finds color inspiration from Natalie’s time at Hambidge and the work of Mary Hambidge.
