Today, on Giving Tuesday, we highlight an organization whose work, like Alabama Chanin, is rooted in textiles and community: Project Threadways.

Project Threadways is a nonprofit that records, studies, and explores the history of textiles. Through their work, they seek to understand and document the impact that textiles and their creation had on our local community in northwest Alabama, the region of the American south, the nation, and at the global level—connecting the people, places, and materials throughout the process.

Founded in 2019 as a 501(c)(3) by Natalie Chanin, also founder of Alabama Chanin, Project Threadways utilizes Alabama Chanin’s experience and Natalie’s vision through academic partnerships and programing with the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture. Whether academic, financial, or creative, Threadways seeks partners to help them further the collection of stories and scholarship to help preserve the past while creating a common future across our region and nation.

Donations fund all work of Project Threadways including operating costs, academic scholarship projects, and public education initiatives. Find out how to donate and support their work here.

P.S.: Save the date for the 2022 Project Threadways Symposium which will be held from April 21 – 23. To be announced soon, the event will take place in Florence, Alabama. Join the Alabama Chanin mailing list to receive the latest information, follow Project Threadways on Instagram, visit ProjectThreadways.org, and read the Project Threadways entry in the Alabama Chanin 21 Years Celebration to learn more about past symposiums.
