“Everything I do starts in a small black book. I always have one in my pocket or bag. I make lists. I draw. I take down notes, memorable quotes, or random thoughts. Things seem to expand out of those pages.”—Phillip March Jones
Phillip March Jones is an artist, writer, curator, photographer, and long-time Alabama Chanin friend and collaborator. He is the founder and creative director of Institute 193, a non-profit contemporary art space in Lexington, Kentucky, and of MARCH, a curatorial platform and gallery located in New York City that operates at the intersection of visual art and social justice.
Natalie and Phillip have known one another since 2005 when he was a student at Rural Studio, Auburn University’s School of Architecture design-build program. We believe that as an artist he sees beauty and relevance in things that most of us either overlook or choose to avoid and that he is inwardly driven to change the way the world thinks about these things. (Take his book Points of Departure as an example.)
Brightly—our upcoming collaboration with Phillip—is six years in the making. We’re proud of the collection and to be supporting the good work of Institute 193.
Learn more about Phillip through his writings for our Journal that showcase artists from the modern South.
