Alabama Chanin Charles Moore Collaboration from 21 Years Celebration Natalie Chanin 21 Years of Sustainable Design

“Reflect: ‘The Revolution will not be televised. The Revolution will be no rerun, brothers. The Revolution—will be live.’ —Gil Scott Heron,” featuring photography by Charles Moore and Robert Rausch from Alabama Chanin’s Revolution catalogue, 2008. From the Alabama Chanin 21 Years Celebration entry titled Charles Moore Collaboration, 2008.

“During the mid-1930s, a group of women attempted to disrupt the customs and traditions of the rural South by crafting quilts with equally radical aesthetics and messages.—Janneken Smucker, Project Threadways Symposium presenter

This year’s Project Threadways Symposium, Textiles and Activism, will explore how textiles are used as a vehicle for expression, how the act of making supports community organization, and how material culture documents activism and movements throughout history. The symposium will take place April 21 – 23 in Florence, Alabama, and offers in-person and virtual experiences.

The event will feature presentations by Carrie Barske-Crawford, Director of the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area; Jessamyn Hatcher and Thuy Lin Tu, professors of Global Studies at New York University; Janneken Smucker, professor and historian at West Chester University; Aleia Brown, Assistant Director of the African American Digital Humanities Initiative; singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash; artist Diana Weymar of Tiny Pricks Project; and designer and environmental activist Barbara de Vries.

Additional programming includes a welcome dinner with chef Whitney Otawka, meals, a tour of The Factory, a workshop with Barbara de Vries, an oral history presentation, and panel discussions.

The Wind + Wave Collection: Our new collection draws inspiration from two of nature’s most dynamic players. Often working in harmony, wind and waves evoke quiet strength and fluidity. A signature “Wave” blue colorway and hand-painted “Wind” motif—which embodies the atmospheric choreography of leaves in the wind—are woven throughout the newly released designs.

Core Essentials Refresh: Explore a refreshed assortment of indispensable wardrobe staples and everyday basics for every wardrobe.

Life + Living: The Wave blue colorway featured in Alabama Chanin’s new Wind + Wave collection carries into our latest collaboration with Heath Ceramics. Discover artisan-crafted plates, bowls, and nested dinnerware sets designed in collaboration with our friends at Heath Ceramics.
