ALABAMA CHANIN - HARVEST ROOTS FERMENTATION 101 WORKSHOP 1

We wrote about Harvest Roots Ferments in 2015, as co-founders Lindsay Whiteaker and Pete Halupka embarked on a fundraising campaign to further grow their small business and organic farm in Mentone, Alabama. Two years and over 40 accounts later—including grocery stores like Whole Foods and Earthfare—Lindsay and Pete have created a regional fermentation operation. They supply their fermented products to cafés (like ours), restaurants, farmer’s markets (like Pepper Place in Birmingham) and grocery stores in Chattanooga, Nashville, Huntsville, Knoxville, and Birmingham.

In 2017, they will source 35,000lbs of organically grown produce from local and regional growers, developing close relationships with each of the farmers. The local produce, combined with their expertise and craft regarding fermentation, creates an innovative (and delicious) product grown, fermented, and sold in the South.

Many weekends they are set up in grocery stores or at markets, sampling their products and sharing knowledge on their process face-to-face with customers. Lindsay and Pete also travel and teach fermentation, the science behind it, and nutritional benefits of eating fermented foods.

We’ll be hosting them at The Factory on Saturday, July 29th for a Harvest Roots Ferments’ Fermentation 101 Workshop where Lindsay and Pete will review the history, science, and application of live cultured foods of all kinds.

After learning about the fermentation process, each class participant will make their own jar of sauerkraut to take home. Participants will be free to ask any questions regarding fermentation—flavors, techniques, process, ingredients, probiotic content, and anything else.

This workshop is the perfect starting point for anyone interested in learning more about fermentation and having a hands-on experience.

Learn more about the process of fermentation and the history of their business on our Journal and visit their website to find out where you can purchase their products.

The School of Making is hosting an Intro to Sewing Workshop the same day, on July 29th, from 10am – 12pm. Plan a weekend trip to Florence and a spend an unforgettable day with us at The Factory.
