Luda Matmurtova has been a member of our production team since 2013. She moved to our community from Uzbekistan nine years ago and has incredible hand sewing and embroidery skills. Luda loves to bake cakes and meat pies, and we often find a freshly made dessert in our staff kitchen from her. She is an integral part of our design and development team—sewing and embroidering samples for upcoming Collections in our design studio, and she works as a seamstress in Bldg. 14 with great care. We share more below about Luda and her role at Alabama Chanin. Luda makes it clear—she loves to sew. If you own a machine-sewn garment with the initials LM in the label, Luda made it. AC: What do you enjoy most about your job at Alabama Chanin? Has your role changed since you started?
LM: I love sewing. During my first years here, I spent more time in the cutting and stenciling departments, but now my daily work mostly involves sewing
AC: What drew you to working at Alabama Chanin?
LM: I love to make beautiful garments. The pieces we make look like a work of art! And I love people—I work with the nicest people in the world!
AC: What is the one thing are you most proud of creating in your personal life?
LM: I am proud that Natalie let me do the stitches for her book, The Geometry of Hand-Sewing.
AC: What is your favorite thing to make (or favorite part of the making process) at Alabama Chanin?
LM: I enjoy sewing the first samples of a textile design and creating the fabric swatches.
AC: What is your first sewing or making memory?
LM: I sewed men’s trousers many years ago before moving to the United States. It was good practice for my sewing skills, but it was not my favorite thing to do. I didn’t enjoy the repetitiveness of the job. Part of what I like about my job at Alabama Chanin is doing different tasks all the time.
